Setting

As one strolls through the old streets of the town of Aínsa, declared of Particular Historical and Artistic Value in 1965, one cannot but drink in the beauty of a setting with marked medieval flavour, some of the exponents of which are the castle, the walls and the doors (11th ? 17th centuries), the Plaza Mayor, Santa Maria Church (12th century), declared a National Monument, or the façades of Casa Arnal (16th century) and Casa Bielsa (16th and 17th centuries), an example of the town?s particular personality and its rich and fascinating cultural heritage.

Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, in the shadow of the calcareous massifs of the Central Pyrenees, in the municipality of Aínsa-Sobrarbe. High mountains, winding, crystalline rivers that splash life all around them as they run downwards, animals in their natural habitat, plant species and unique ecosystems combined with a climate that is characterised by its large number of sunny days, all go to make this land a true natural paradise.

The possibilities of enjoying this wonderful environment are endless, from excursions on foot or by mountain bike, to mountaineering, horse riding or more adventurous sports such as canyoneering, rafting, canoeing or climbing, among many other activities.

In the winter season, the nearby ski slopes of Piau Engaly and Saint Lary Soulan, on the French side of the Pyrenees, or the Cerler slopes located in the nearby Benasque Valley, offer you the possibility of enjoying the best snow in a natural landscape of great beauty.

You can enjoy a whole world of adventure in the open air, or a haven of peace if you prefer to walk and go for the quieter activities.

Moreover, just a few minutes from Aínsa are the most significant protected natural areas in the Pyrenees and indeed the whole Peninsula: Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, Posets-Maladeta Natural Park and La Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park.

The cultural offer of the medieval town of Ainsa is no less attractive; the most representative sample is the Morisma, which involves a popular performance in which the people of the town and surrounding areas participate. The event is held every two years, on the weekend before September 14th, in the Plaza Mayor of Aínsa and commemorates the battle that took place between Moors and Christians in the 8th century during the reign of Garci Ximenez.

The representation commemorates the appearance of the Holy Cross on a kermes oak, a sign of support for the Christian troops, and almost the entire town participates in the event, either as actors, in costume making, set designing, organisation, or other activities.

The Morisma is an historical drama from ancient times handed down through the generations, which tells us how the conquest of Ainsa by the Christians in the 8th century took place and which is attended by an increasing number of visitors.
